Nokia E72

The Nokia E72 is a popular little gadget – and rightly so.  While other smartphones like the Samsung Omnia and LG Viewty have been taking inspiration from the iPhone, the Nokia E72 more resembles a BlackBerry handset – with a large screen and QWERTY keypad wedged in tightly underneath. The E72 is available on plans from Optus, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone and Three.Nokia E72

At first glance it is obvious that this is a sophisticated piece of technology – on the right side is a slot for a mini USB and a memory card slot and on the left is the volume control, power button and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The back of the unit is dominated by the impressive 5x megapixel camera.

You navigate through the phone via a little touch pad, very similar to the mouse pad on a laptop, and it works well for the most part. Some users may have trouble getting used to the huge sensation difference between the sensitive touch pad and the rather robust QWERTY keys. Similarly the miniature QWERTY keys may be tricky users with larger hands.

Where other handsets like the iPhone still draw a line between being a PDA or just a phone with web access, the E72 will not be limited. An impressive feature is the E72s ability to create and edit documents on the go. The included Quickoffice 5.3  takes full advantage of the E72 keypad and huge screen and help you create text documents on the go. Through the Ovi store (which is swiftly accessible through the included Wi-Fi) is is possible to download Quickoffice Premier 6 which supports Microsoft Office 2007 files. With a PDF reader, Zip manger and printer support the E72 is an amazingly versatile piece of hardware. For the security conscious there is also an encryption function for the phones memory and any SD cards you may be using.

If that’s not impressive enough, E72 also features WiPresenter –  an application which enables your phone to connect wirelessly to a computer and present and control your PowerPoint presentations. Add to this the growing number of expansion apps that are available from the Ovi store and you have one powerful handset.

The media gallery cannot be faulted – the camera takes crisp, richly coloured photos with autofocus and flash and supports video recording. RealPlayer is a welcome inclusion onto the Nokia E72  and supports a wide variety of playback formats. FM radio is included. The built in compass and Nokia Maps 2.0 make finding your way too easy.

The factory settings would have us believe that the Nokia E72 is targeted specifically towards the corporate-oriented individual – however this handset has proven that it is versatile enough to be used by anyone after a quick, stylish and extremely well built smartphone
